Foods that Store Well In a Dorm Room

Foods That Store Well in a Dorm Room

Oatmeal and cereal–  With lots of fiber keeping you full longer and giving you energy, oatmeal is the perfect breakfast or snack to make in your room.  You can add dry fruits like raisins or cranberries to add extra flavor to your breakfast. Cereal and granola both keep well for a long period of time. Choose cereal high in fiber and low in added sugars, healthy cereals can give you nutrients like iron and vitamin D.

Nut butters- Nut butters are delicious for spreads and dips.  Try peanut, cashew, or almond for great sources of protein and fiber giving you energy and keeping hunger away longer.

Nuts and seeds– Nuts and seeds don’t need to be refrigerated and are nonperishable foods that are great healthy snacks.  Take them on the go  for a snack while walking to class.

Canned fruit- Keeping canned fruits with 100% fruit juice instead of syrup or low sugar canned fruit in your dorm room for when you don’t have a chance to grab a fresh fruit.  Keep a can opener in your room or use fruit cups for portioned, quick access fruits like peaches, pears, pineapple and applesauce.

Canned soup- Canned soup is microwavable and easily stored in your room.  Pick low sodium soups with lots of veggies.  Enjoy soups with chicken, lean beef, and legumes for an extra healthy protein boost.

Canned fish– light tuna and salmon gives a great source of omega 3 and protein.  You can easily store these canned foods in a dorm room.

Hummus– hummus is made from chickpeas and olive oil.  It gives a source of protein and unsaturated fats.  Eat hummus on crackers and sandwiches, or use as a dip for veggies.

Sweeteners– keeping a bottle of honey or agave is a wonderful healthier option then sugar. It’s easily stored in your room and is great when you need a little sweeter to your favorite snacks.

Living in college is crazy enough.  Staying healthy? It’s harder then you think.  The cafeteria food is not always the healthiest from ice cream being served every day to pizza being sold at every meal.  A big part of staying healthy is making homemade meals.  But how can that happen while you’re living in a dorm room?

That is my goal with this blog; to change the world of healthy college eating. I am currently a culinary student at Startford University.  When I graduate, my goal is to teach everyday people how to make delicious food. I want you to be able to do this while you are away at school.

I don’t want you to stress over anything. I want you to try a few recipes, check out a few tips, and change a few of your eating habits. You don’t need to make drastic chances to your life just to stay healthy.  The only thing I want for you out of all of this is to be happy and feel comfortable about yourself.  Being young, we need to find a medium of doing what we want but also respecting our bodies.  I never want you to obsess over counting calories, but you need to be mindful of what you put into yourself.  Eating healthy should not being something that takes over your life; you should slowly make changes so eventually it becomes second nature.
